I recently found myself in a tricky situation. I live in a neighborhood with a strict policy on debris in yards–essentially they wanted you to clean up before anything had fallen off the tree. The apple tree fell right over in our front yard, and the boyfriend was away on business and would be for weeks. If I wanted to keep the nagging neighbors away I would have to do something and quick.

The problem wasn’t really any of the above, however, it was really that I couldn’t handle a chainsaw.

If you aren’t familiar with how the lopper works, here is a little primer. This tool is shaped like oversized garden loppers. It has scissor handles with two “on” buttons, both of which have to be pressed before the machine will start (great detail for a klutz like me). The upper “blade” works like a chainsaw while the lower one works as a stabilizing arm. So basically, you open the arms wide and close the blades around the branch you want to cut. Unlike a chainsaw, you are protected from the blade kicking back at you by the stabilizing arm underneath. The alligator loppers will cut through any branch up to four inches in diameter like butter. It makes a job like the one I mention above as easy as it can possibly be.

Not only did I manage to get the apple tree all cleared up within a weekend, but the lopper has come through time and time again. Since the apple tree incident we have had to take down other trees as well and now instead of watching I can actually help cut up the branches to make the process go more quickly. The boyfriend has to take the trunk and larger branches with a full-size chainsaw, but I can at least make a large dent in the process too. I’ve found the alligator lopper to be really easy to maintain and handle throughout the process. The only drawback is the plug-in cord, and although there is a cordless model I didn’t want to worry about having to run out of power. Despite the cord, you better believe I’ll be pulling this thing out for years to come.

This is a great tool that makes for a quick and easy job. I just wanted to spread the alligator lopper love so more people could enjoy it!
